Reference Number: PR201540, Press Release Issue Date: Aug 12, 2020
Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg visited Għeriexem Road in Rabat where Infrastructure Malta is implementing a €4 million project. Today saw the commencement of excavation works so the agency can form new foundations for this road, work which will halt damages which for decades were happening to this road and its buildings.

Minister Ian Borg said that, “here we have another project which will respond to the plea of residents, about an 800-metre road which was built on layers of fragile and fragmented clay, damages which were getting worse every time it rained. A few months ago, we had an incident in Saqqajja Hill. We do not want to see the same things happening here. We are doing our best to finish excavation before the rain starts to ensure safety and give peace of mind to residents. This is the work that truly puts people’s quality of life first.”

The Għeriexem Road project includes new foundations, better design for the carriageway, a belvedere with a footpath, benches overlooking the valley and embellishment with several trees. The methods to be used were identified together with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and environmental authorities towards the conservation of any remains as well as the least possible impact on fields. Project plans were prepared by the Public Works Department.
