Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri attended for the donation of a set of Fresnel lenses from Transport Malta to Mater Dei ambulances and civil protection vehicles.

Minister Ian Borg said that, “road safety remains a main priority for this government, and we are looking to continue strengthening it through holistic initiatives, from roads with safer designs, to educational initiatives, to more enforcement, and now we are introducing this technology as well. It is satisfactory that today Transport Malta is donating Fresnel lenses to two principal groups of front-liners who carry out important work at any time of day, from Monday to Sunday, from January to December. In the meantime, I encourage everyone driving any type of commercial vehicle to come forward and participate. Let’s all work together for safer roads and drive safely for ourselves and others.”

“I am proud that today this department invests in the best equipment instead of purchasing second-hand items. Our priority as a government is to continue investing in training and in the best equipment so the people of this department can work in the most effective way while we protect them too”, said Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri.

Minister Camilleri explained that our duty as a government is to work as one team to make a difference. In fact, this initiative is one of many projects expected to be announced in the near future.

The Fresnel lens is a film that sticks to the passenger side window and widens the perspective of this side of the vehicle. This eliminates a number of blind spots which do not appear on the vehicle’s mirrors, while helping left-hand drive vehicle drivers to manoeuvre their vehicles and switch lanes more easily and more safely. The Fresnel lens is easily installed and does not require much maintenance. The idea behind this technology is to protect the safety of more vulnerable road users.

Before approving local use of the Fresnel lens, the Malta Road Safety Council carried out extensive testing with Express Trailers.
